What is Archie, and what does it do?

Archie was developed to provide information for distributed computers. In the 1980s, American Universities used FTP to connect their computers. But users often relied on the word of their friends to find out what they wanted. Alan Emtage Peter Deutsch Bill Heelan set out to fix this problem by creating a database searchable of all the documents available on their computers.

Emtage Heelan Deutsch created this search script in Montreal, Canada at McGill University on September 10 1990. It was released by way of a computer program that downloaded anonymous directory listings from FTP sites. A database of file name names could then be searched.

Archie's name is derived by the word archive, but has nothing to do with a popular comic book character. Despite this, it is frequently associated with the comics.

The server names, IP addresses and other information stored in the FORM array will be decoded to construct the search. The query field can be found in a variable named query. This variable is retrievable by the program.
